Make Space for More Flies

Pushing in stinger hooks to create more space for flies
More space means more flies. Photo: Kyle Shea.

When fishing for steelhead and salmon, we fish a lot of articulated style flies tied with a ‘stinger hook‘ attached to the body of the fly using a loop of stiff wire or braid. However, many of these flies tend to be fairly large and often take up a lot of space in the fly box.

That can be an issue when trying to carry enough flies on your person to cover all the color combinations and sizes worth trying over the course of the day.

To maximize the amount of flies in his box, Alaska West guide, Greg Houska, showed us this ridiculously simple, but embarrassingly helpful tip..

Before putting flies in your box, push your stinger hook forward, sliding it towards the front of the fly.. Voila! You’ve just opened up another inch or so of space in your box.

Huh. Why didn’t we think of that?

Yep. Six years of college and you’d think I would have though of that myself. Nope. Thanks for the advice!
