LeaderCalc 2016

Tying your own fly fishing leaders.
Tie your own! Photo: Kyle Shea.

Ever considered tying your ownn leaders but wasn’t quite sure where to start? Hand tied leaders can offer a number of advantages over standard ‘knotless’ tapered leaders, but it can be a little daunting at first. After all, there are virtually endless formulas out there depending on where, how, and what you’re fishing for!

However, one of our favorite resources on leader design has been LeaderCalc – A spreadsheet created by the folks at Global FlyFisher designed to break down your desired leader based on a number of variables such as fishing style, desired length, tippet size, and fly line weight.

Well, as if it wasn’t simple enough, Global FlyFisher has launched their newest edition of LeaderCalc, now available as a super simple online form! Simply select your fishing category (saltwater, two hand, dry fly, streamer fishing, etc), the length you’d like your leader to be, your desired tippet, and your intended fly line weight and voila! LeaderCalc will find you a whole bunch of leader formulas and information about each based on your criteria.

Currently LeaderCalc contains 2703 different leader formulas covering just about every fly fishing situation you can think of. We think it’s an incredible resource and encourage you to give it a try! Make sure to check it out on Global FlyFisher’s website, here.
