Hopeful News for Kanektok King Salmon

As many of you are well aware, sport fishing for king salmon on the Kanektok River (home to our Alaska West operation) has been closed for the past two seasons due to low escapement numbers.

However, last season we were excited to report that according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, commercial harvests were considered to be above average. That was really good news.

Today, we have even better news..

According to our sources, sport fishing for king salmon on the Kanektok River will be open for the 2016 season. As of today, the current plan is to open the fishery to catch and release for king salmon, with the potential for a limit of one chinook per day.

Our vote is for an entirely catch and release regulation on Kanektok king salmon. However, regardless of more liberal regulations, Alaska West will remain catch and release only for king salmon.

This is great news for the Kanektok, king salmon, Alaska West, and fly fisherman alike. Catch-and-release is just a good practice anywhere to maintain (and hopefully grow) the size of the runs and the size of the returning salmon. Break out the Chartreuse/Fl. Blue Dolly Llamas, Karluk Flash Flies, and Articulated Hareball Leeches!
