Kanektok King Salmon Doing Well

Releasing a king salmon.

As many of you are aware, the king salmon fishery on the Kanektok River (home to our Alaska West operation) has been closed to sport fishing for the past two seasons. However, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game recently released the numbers for the first commercial salmon opener of the season and we’re happy to report, the kings are doing well!

Last Friday, July 3rd, 2015, commercial salmon fishing opened for twelve hours between 9:00 am and 9:00 pm. During that time, a total of 3,116 king salmon were caught in our district alone, a harvest rate that is considered by the State of Alaska to be above average.

Our beloved king salmon may have had a rough last couple of seasons, but we couldn’t be happier that they appear to be rebounding so quickly, and are going to do our part to help them to continue to flourish. Long live the King!
