The Foxy Leech – Tying Instructions

How to tie the Foxy Leech fly pattern.
Tie this, catch fish. Photos: Stuart Foxall.

Contrary to popular belief, flies don’t have to be incredibly complex to catch fish. In fact, often times the most effective flies are the simplest. Bunny leech style flies are a prime example. When tied in varying sizes and colors, the bunny leech is an extremely effective fly for trout, steelhead, salmon, or many other cold water species!

Fish just seem to love rabbit strips! So, today we present you with the tying instructions of an awesome take on a timeless classic, courtesy of Stuart Foxall.

The Foxy Leech – Tying Instructions

Although it’s fun to tie fancy flies (such as intruders), and have them in your box for that special moment, it would be fair to say that there have been more fish caught on simple bunny strip flies than these specialty flies. Therefore I always like to have a few in my fly box.

Here’s my version of this pretty simple, cheap, but more importantly, effective fly.

Step 1: Loop your braid through the eye of an up-eye stinger hook (we like the Owner SSW). Fix the hook in your vice and start wrapping your thread.

Step 2: Cut a length of bunny strip and cut one end into a nice “V” shape. This will give you a nice taper to your fly tail.

Step 3: Secure the bunny strip to the stinger hook with thread wraps. You don’t want too much of the bunny hanging at the back of the hook. If you get any “nipping” fish we want to get them.

Step 4: Whip finish your thread and super glue the knot. This will protect the knot and stop the bunny strip from slipping or twisting.

Step 5: Put a Waddington or intruder shank into your vice and attach some dumbbell eyes with some figure eight wraps of tying thread.

Step 6: Tie in the braid along the shank and lightly coat with super glue. Then, double back over itself and wrap down again.

Step 7: Tie in some Straggle Fritz (also known as Polar Chenille).

Step 8: Wrap Straggle Fritz (Polar Chenille) forward in touching turns to form the body.

Step 9: Tie the bunny strip down at the head. Make sure it is the same length as the braid for maximum movement.

Step 10: Tie in some Pearl Flashabou over the top of the bunny strip. I have bent the end tags underneath the fly body.

Step 11: Tie in four strands of rubber legs underneath the body. Trim them different lengths so they don’t tangle.

Step 12: Wrap in a schlappen hackle to tidy things up.

Step 13: Whip finish, cement, and repeat

There are virtually endless color combinations to play with as well. While it may not be the most trendiest fly out there, they are certainly very, very effective for many cold water species! Just tie on, cast, swing, and hold on tight!
