Not what you were thinking? You’re not alone.
During the early part of our season, many of our first time guests at Alaska West are pleasantly surprised to find out that many of the chum salmon we target look just like this; big, bright, and covered in sea lice. Not exactly the dark, barred up, goblins often pictured in magazines.
Located only 6 miles from the ocean, our river boasts unbelievable numbers of chrome bright chums. In fact, some are so bright that they are often difficult to distinguish between other species of salmon at first glance.
They’re also super aggressive, pull really hard, and tend to break more rods than any other species we encounter. And in a twisted way, we think that’s pretty cool.
