Great News from Bristol Bay!
Earlier this month, President Obama announced via video message the decision to withdraw Bristol Bay indefinitely from all future oil and gas leasing. The decision continues a previous withdrawal set in 2010, but was due to expire in 2017.
In case you’re not aware, Bristol Bay supports the largest sockeye salmon fishery in the world and is home to countless other fish and wildlife species, numerous Alaskan Native communities, and is the backbone for many commercial, subsistence, and sport fisheries.
According to President Obama, the withdrawal “prevents consideration of this area for any oil or gas leasing for purposes of exploration, development, or production..” And that’s a good thing.
