Fly Tying Tip: Taming Your Flash

Tidy Tying Material
Nice and tidy. Photo: Kyle Shea

Here’s a super simple tip for you fly tyers out there. The next time you are working with Krystal Flash, Flashabou, or any other synthetic flash material, leave it in the package! Then, cut a small triangle near the base of package. Now, with your tying scissors reach into the package and pick out the number of strands needed for your fly.

Removing flash from the package this way will make sure to leave your flash in good shape and tidy on the tying bench. Gone are the days of a tangled mess of flash bound together by a zip-tie. Now get tying!

Awesome tips. I’ve got mess load of flash. This would definitely cure that.

    Thanks.

Here is another tip to hold and store your flashabout or crystal flash. Take a section (about a couple of feet) off of a wide roll of Foodsaver material. Make a seal about every 1.5 inches. Then, cut off the two sides of the long strip you have made. Voila, you now have a strip of small compartments that you can thread all of your flash through in an organized fashion by colour and/or type.
