Here are three things you can do to catch more bonefish. Enjoy!
- Use a stiff leader. Stiff leaders help turn over bigger flies, and they make your cast land straighter too. Here’s how to tie your own.
- Try a curl cast to a fish swimming away. Advanced anglers only on this one! Shots at fish going away are tough because your fly should really be moving away from the fish when you strip it. If you cast sidearm and with more power than necessary, you can pinch the cast off abruptly after it goes past the fish and curl the leader back towards the fish, making that first strip move the fly away from the fish. It’s hard – your editor has pulled it off…twice.
- Point your rod towards the spot you think the fish is. Always! This allows your guide to say ‘more right’ or ‘more left’ without everyone getting all wrapped around the axle with clock times.

Cool Tips! Keep them coming. Over the last couple years I’ve written down the tips I’ve used and some that I’ve collected. It’s great to read some salty tips. Being from Michigan and chasing steelhead most of my tips are cold and freshwater related.
Happy Holidays!
