Yes, we’re fishing people, but being fishing people we spend a lot of time outside, and that means that we sometimes have some random tips for you that have more to do with being outside than they have to do with fishing. This is one of those tips.
Pre-Heat Your Thermos
Before you fill your Thermos with coffee/soup/hot chocolate/tea and head outside for the day, pre-heat it!
Just follow these easy steps.
- Take some hopefully boiling, but at least very hot, water and dump it into your Thermos.
- Put the lid on it.
- Let it sit for a few minutes.
- Dump out the water.
- Fill your Thermos with coffee/soup/hot chocolate/tea.
- Enjoy super hot beverages all day long.
You see, Thermos-type beverage containers keep your liquids warm by surrounding them with air, which is a very good insulator. If you pre-heat your Thermos with hot liquid, it makes not only the materials in the container warmer, but it also pre-heats the air inside the container.
That keeps your stuff much warmer, much longer. Try it. You’re welcome.

just the opposite, but the same goes for coolers…when we are going on overnight offshore trips, we “cool” down our coolers before we fill them with ice. If your Yeti, frigid rigid, etc cooler has been baking in the florida sun on the deck of your boat all week come the weekend when your ready to go fishing – that cooler is going to retain a lot of heat and melt alot of ice before it gets cool. I just run the hose in mine for a while to cool it off, it saves a ton of ice….

I guess I assumed that anyone with an average or better IQ knew about pre-warming (or cooling) containers. Maybe I am giving my fellow man too much credit ?? 🙂
