We haven’t run a contest in a while. We have some extra Abel nippers floating around. It’s bonefishing season. We love haiku.
Hey, let’s run a bonefish haiku contest and send the winner a free set of Abel nippers!
Contest Rules
- Submit a haiku about bonefish or bonefishing via a comment on this blog post. What’s a haiku? See below.
- On Saturday, November 17th we’ll pick our favorite entry and send its author a pair of the badd-est ass nippers we know – the ones from Abel.
Bonefish Haiku
A haiku is a 3-line poem, with lines consisting of 5 syllables, 7 syllables and 5 syllables. It doesn’t have to rhyme. Here’s an example.

I’m so glad you ate my fly
Damn, you can swim fast

Bonefish Haiku:
Albula Vulpes
I so want to see you run
Andros, sea, warmth, sun
Bone Thugs N Harmony inspired bonefish Haiku:
whatcha gonna do
is no where to hide
Deneki comes
Tailing in the grass
Cast lands gracefully on water
Refused once again
feesh 40 foot left, mon
streep, streep, streep, slow, he’s on it
damn, you pull from face!
wade ankle deep flats
neck gaiter, 8 wt, and hat
all in tow for bones
Mirrored sides you hide,
But tails can always be found,
Land fly, make no sound.
Elusive King
The Flats my Home Where I Roam
See me Now I’m Gone
Walking thru the blue
No clue what my guide points at
I cast anyway
Sun-drenched mangroves hide
Peeking tails betray the bones
Sixty feet downwind.
Tan and pearl Gotcha
Strip. Strip. Sniff. Strip. Set the hook!
Bonefish on baby!
Ghostly gray shadow
Tipped up tail and pounding heart
Cast…strip…take…and smile
How I love bonefish!
Do you want me to catch you?
Poems of fish rock!
Fly got grey-ghosted
Roostertail across the flat
Living quicksilver
~Saltwater Chrome~
My Ghost of the Flats
A mirage amid shades of azul
I can plainly see
Blue sky, white sand, wind
Silver prince I see your tail
Doublehaul, strip, set
Andros South is it
With Bonefish and Cold Kalik
Hope to See You Soon
White sand, white fish
Silver fish, silver sand
Damn where did he go?
Wind and bonefish on
the flats… I should have practiced
the Belgium cast… duck!
Silver bullets flash
On the last, most perfect cast
He’s on, he’s gone: F$&k!!
Eat it, Eat it, EAT!
Oh, that was so close, I guess…
Wait, he’s back on it
warm breeze on water
twitching fins break the surface
calm before the storm
Bonefish…invisible or not
When I cast to you
You rock
Pink Lips, silver dress
Her shadows from my dreams
Rod in hand… Let’s Bone!
The angler waits with bent knees
Near the changing horizon
Tide and tails approach
Pinky Shrimpy fly
Go down the hatch of Mr. Bone
Yee hah! Here we go!
Taking my father
To Andros where fish run free
I love my father
Hook cute little mouth
run fast scream line quick and far
I wish I was there now
wish I was there now
this should be the last line
Silver dart calling
Glinting sunlight hides its home
My line will find it
Silver-slender fish
Sliding swift on shining sand
Shadow tell-tale sign
Craning, straining eye
Feed cast, load rod, shoot line pause
Sink, strip, strike! Bone on!
One day I will go
No tropics yet, just a dream
of silver and sand
Super sleek and silver,
Big eyed bullet rips the tides,
Line burns to arbor.
slow swimming gray ghost
led with a gotcha…strip, strip…
off to the races
waving silver tail
beckons my crazy charlie
pure joy as drag screams
Line taught between us
Each pulling with all our might
Hunter or hunted?
Trout, smallies, panfish.
Biding my time ’til I can
make it to Andros
Searching and waiting.
Grey ghost is exactly that.
Be ready for it.
Cast for bones all day
Waters of Ascension Bay
Beer…I think I may
Reaching waves cut blue,
Where phantoms and grey ghosts hide
Feed my soul and I.
Use a ten fly rod
You get a sunscreen and boat
Bonefishing the flats
Sun in eyes, knee deep
Silver flash fifty feet, cast
Strip set, finger burns
Azure on white sand
Enter Emerald shadow
Silver ghost haunts me
Aquatic mirage
I felt you take my fly
Now you are both gone
Bonefish I see you
All sleek, silver and shiny
Three two one fish on!!!
Barely visible
I try my best to woo you
You laugh at me hard
Peeling off backing
You are heading for the rocks
I am left broken
Blue sky warm water
Light breeze and willing bonefish
Simple perfection
