Adam Kryder was a fantastic addition to our guide staff at Alaska West this year. He noticed something pretty profound about angling and attitudes and was kind enough to write it up for us.
Thanks, Adam!
The Power of Positivity
Guiding at Alaska West has given me a great gift. As a guide I am afforded the fortune of bearing witness to the power of positivity and its effect on the results of my clients’ fishing. I wholeheartedly believe that I see better results in anglers that carry a positive and relaxed attitude. I also believe that the positive attitude of my colleagues at Alaska West becomes infectious to our clients.
I remember one day I was on the river with a couple. It was the wife’s first time ever fishing and the husband was a long time fisherman. The night before when I introduced myself and asked them what species they wanted to target they said, “we just want to have fun.” The next day turned out to be one of the best silver fishing days I had all year. We fished less, but when the line was in the water, it was almost always tight. I had never seen anything like it before. As I continue to help my anglers attain that same attitude I see them have more and more and more success.
So next time you’re on the river, try this experiment: fish what makes you smile. Tie on that fly that you haven’t tried before but you’ve always wanted to. Fish that piece of water that you’ve always looked at, yet walked by. Acquiesce to the positivity and optimism that it takes to be an angler. You will be fascinated by the results.
