There seems to be a mini-trend going on these days in the world of tackle storage. Following the lead of our conventional angling brethren, fly anglers are starting to use soft-sided ‘wallets’ of various sizes and configurations. For example, Bill Lenehan wrote a great guest post for us about how he uses ‘worm wallets’ to store his flies.
Last year Simms came out with a larger version of the tackle wallet idea. It’s called the Headwaters Tackle Wallet
, and we’ve been using it a bunch. It’s a soft-sided gear wallet a little larger than a hardcover book, filled with heavy-duty TPU zip-lock pouches that you can velcro in and out.
Here’s why we like it.
- It’s perfect for storing shooting heads! We’ve got a dozen tucked in ours, along with some assorted sinktips and braided loops.
- The clear pouches make it really easy to find what you’re looking for. You can see the color code and/or grain weights printed on your shooting heads, for example.
- It’s easily configurable. Just keep your gear in the ziplocks and velcro in and out what you need for a particular trip.
- It’s very pack-able and doesn’t take up much room. The thin shape and soft sides make it fit great in your suitcase or your boat bag or your backpack.
