Chris Price is back today with a gem of a casting tip. Simple, insightful, helpful!
Pull!
Here’s a casting tip for all anglers, from beginner to expert. In the sport there is always something to learn, and hopefully this will help you make a better cast!
Think about a chain. What is a chain used for – pulling, right? Have you ever tried to push a chain? You have to pull a chain to move it. Think about this when you are casting.
Pull the fly line with the rod tip. In the back cast, as the fly line starts to straighten out, pull the line forward with the rod tip, keeping the rod tip in a straight line and straight plane and then simply follow through forward. As the line begins to straighten out in front, pull the line into the back cast, once again keeping the rod tip in a straight line and on a straight plane.
Keeping the rod tip in a straight line and on the straight plane is important because the fly line will follow the path of the rod tip. This will create a tight loop in the cast which will help load the rod, cut through wind, give accuracy and give more power. If you arc the rod tip’s path, whether it be off the straight line or the plane, the loop will open up enabling the wind to catch it, draining power and accuracy.
Pull, don’t push!
