One of the great things about the fly fishing community is that most of us care a lot about rivers, lakes, oceans and their surrounding ecosystems. We want to make sure that our favorite fisheries stay healthy (or get healthier!) – for our own enjoyment and the enjoyment of future generations, but also just because it’s the right thing to do.
We have a few organizations that we know, love and support, but we’d love some input from you.
What’s your favorite organization out there that’s fighting for the health of our fisheries? Why?

Shamelessly, I’ll mention Recycled Fish (www.RecycledFish.org) who teaches anglers effective ways to live as stewards every day, not just when we’re on the water. The vehicle I choose to drive in Nebraska has something to do with the health of rivers in Alaska, for example.
Up in Alaska, the Renewable Resources Coalition, Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska, Alaska Conservation Foundation.

I’m going to have to go with the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust… ya know… I can’t fight my nature. They are doing great work doing the science that underpins the conservation.
I’d add that there are a lot of great orgs out there doing great work and only a few bad ones. I’m also a fan of The Nature Conservancy, TU, FFF and more locally, Cal Trout and Friends of the River.
Lots of battles to fight.

Not to be outdone by the esteemed Mr. Stouffer I will shamelessly nominate the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture (www.http://www.facebook.com/EBTJV).
Working our collective asses off to protect the jewel of mountains…

I’d say Western Rivers Conservancy does some pretty cool things for us in the PNW.

I’ll also throw my support behind Teeg and Recycled Fish. Almost all of my volunteer efforts are dedicated to that organization.
Other than that, I’m a member of TU and Sierra Club. I haven’t gotten involved other than signing petitions and sending letters to Washington. I also offer similar letter-writing support to the Pebble Mine, Asian Carp and various Salmon/Steelhead restoration efforts. Wish I could do more.

I would offer up the Native Fish Society as my favorite group at least with regard to holding up Wild Steelhead as a value for all of us. They use good science and common sense in their approach of support for wild steelhead runs. Hat’s off to them. I encourage others to join.
thanks
