Andros South Fishing Report – April 2010

April at Andros South is right up at the top of the list for the most popular time to join us -though we all know the fishing depends more on the weather than time of year in these parts. This season the weather held out nicely and for the most part we made it through without any major weather systems hitting us. Temps ranged between 75 and 85 degrees the whole month which was quite comfortable for our guests.

This month we welcomed back Andrew Moy of Tightlines Fly Shop and the great group he has put together. Andrew Lapsley brought his son for his first trip to Andros South. Will Carvounis and Paul Reithmeier rounded out the Moy group for this year. Dave Hansen and Jerry Taylor came back for another round of hard fishing (and partying). They ended up doing a killer Blue Waterday with Roggie and somehow persuaded our manager Rick to join them. He’s still recovering from the combination of beer, fish and fast boats!

Keith Graham and Jean Keckhut joined us from WorldWideAngler in Anchorage, Alaska which was surely a nice break from the winter blues of Alaska. We also saw Joe Dudra as he used us as a warm up for his final permit trips of the season. And to top off the month of April we welcomed back Frank Carlton and his wild band of Blue Boners who all know how to have a great time catching fish, drinking good rum and eating fresh Conch Salad every day.

The fishing was good as usual for most of April, even though we had some tough weather at times. The guests powered through and ended up catching quite a few fish during the month. No huge fish were landed, but quite a few were brought to hand in the 5-8lb range. Many of the guests this month were not into messing with schools of bonefish so we did not see a lot of huge numbers landed at any one time, but the quality of each fish was high. As usual most of the guests were open to harassing cuda and shark and even some snapper from time to time which really made for some happy guides since cuda and snapper are two of the favorite species of the local Androsians.

The Blue Water fishing started to pick up this month as well though normally it is quite good by February. Due to cooler than average weather earlier in the year the fishing took longer to heat up than normal. A good number of Dorado, cuda, grouper and other interesting fish were caught on the few Blue Water trips we did this month. Unfortunately the tuna were tough and none were brought to hand – maybe next time!
